Default Clicking / Ticking Sound During Wash Cycle

Jake-

Thanks again for your service to all humanity via this web site.

I have a Kenmore top load washer 110.28922791 and during the wash cycle only, the agitator is making a clicking / ticking noise every second or so exactly like this You Tube video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iGFH0QpNnY

The washer completes each load and completes the spin cycle without any abnormal clicking or sounds. I replaced the motor coupler on this washer no more than 3 months ago. (My wife learned her lesson and the wash loads don't appear to be a large as they used to be! ).

My question is how do I trouble shoot this? Is it the agitator clutch/dogs? or is it the motor centrifugal switch?

Thanks for your help.

Charlie

Hi Charlie,

It sounds like either the clutch or the gearcase is getting ready to go out.

What year is your washer? If you don't know you can post the serial# and I can tell you, because the clutch and gearcase can get costly.

Jake- Thanks for the reply. The serial number is: CJ0613427. I can't remember but it should be a mid to late 90's model. I must say I sure am disappointed in all Whirlpool appliances from that era. I have had trouble with anything made by Whirlpool over those years. I have a couple of questions: i) Should I keep using the washer "as is" until it fails and then fix, or will fixing ASAP save me from other problems? ii) I have seen some other threads that indicate this problem is the centrifugal motor switch. Is there anything I can do to eliminate that as my culprit? iii) This is definitely not an agitator cam/dogs problem right? This problem would make sense to me since I only have the clicking on wash cycle and not on the spin cycle. Thanks for your help. Charlie

Ok Charlie, yes its a 1999 model.

I'd take the motor off and put it on your floor with the electrical harness still attached to it, then run it in the agitation cycle and see if that sound still occurs.

No, it doesn't sound like the cam/dogs to me.

Do you know how to remove the motor?

OK... will do. I had to take the motor off when replacing the motor coupler a couple of months ago. No big deal. I will report results back.

Electricity does scare me, but I will be safe.
