Default Washer Issue

Im having a bit of a problem with a Kenmore #110.28882790. The washer will not spin at all regardless of setting. It fills and drains the water just fine, but it won't spin. I have yet to begin troubleshooting as I'm also having trouble getting the back cover off

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: I was told removing the back cover is not necessary? Also to add, the washer does not click, rather it "humms"

Hi,

Yes, don't try to remove the back, because its not meant to come off. You have to remove the cabinet.

If your motor is running/humming but not turning the drum, then its possibly your motor coupling thats bad.

Now is your motor running and humming, or not running and just humming?

Here's the motor coupling for your model:
Manufacturer's Number: 285753A
285753A

Read #2 and #5 here on how to access and change it:
http://www.applianceaid.com/procedures.html

Before you put the new one on, turn that gearcase shaft clockwise and counterclockwise to make sure its not locked it and turns fairly easy. I've seen gearcases lock-up and snap that puppy clean off.

Here is how to remove the end caps on this design:

Then tilt the console back on its hinges.

Unplug your washer first!

Thanks for the info, Jake. I'll definitely do as you suggested in the morning.
As far as the motor, how do I know if it is running or not? (Sorry, a bit new to this ) I can only hear a light hum.

Its ok,

If the motor was running, then when you turned it off you could hear the motor winding down.

Just now getting to the washer
The motor isn't running.
The gearcase shaft, is that exposed or would I need to remove anything to get to it?

Thanks again.

edit: nevermind overlooked the link you gave.

Removed the pump, the shaft moves freely in either direction (I hope this was the shaft you were referring to?).

Will update once I removed the motor.

edit: "gearcase", duh! ahaha. I can turn the shaft freely with half of the coupler/rubber piece (can't do it by hand, fingers to big to get leverage). Now, is the shaft suppose to be able to spin endlessly or to certain point? The reason I ask, I can turn the shaft about 3-4 full revolutions in either direction until it stops.

Coupler doesn't look to be damaged/broken.

Yes, the gearcase shaft should turn one way to turn the agitator, that should turn freely, and then turning the gearcase shaft the other way should turn the spin basket(inner tub), now it will turn about 3-4 full revolutions this way then will tighten up and should start turning the spin basket(inner tub), but you have to use more force to turn it.

Thanks for the info.

The inner tub does spin with more force. Same thing with the agitator. However, turning it counter-clockwise (agitator), the shaft spins freely for 2-3 revolutions then tightens back up (still spins), but the agitator stops. After 1-2 full revolutions at this point, the agitator begins to turn again. Also, how far is the agitator suppose to turn? I'm noticing that it will only move about 1/4 (maybe even less) for each half turn at the shaft.

Yes, when the agitator is moving when your turning the gearcase shaft it will move that way back and forth, as long as it doesn't stop moving then your ok.

Did you check your lid switch? on some models the water will drain, but not spin if the lid switch is broken.

When you close the lid, do you hear a click sound just its all the way down? If not, then its definitely your lid switch.

Here's the lid switch for your model you can order:
Manufacturer part number 3949238 is RepairClinic item number 547222
3949238

Here's a help link to change it:
http://www.applianceaid.com/procedures.html#check
