Default [FIXED] Kenmore Coldspot 106.56562400 w/o Cold Air

My 5 years old Kenmore SxS Colsspot 106.56562400 stop producing cold air yesterday. The compressor only runs 3-5 seconds then turned off by itself and it keeps doing that on day long with a frequency of 3-4 minutes apart. The fan behind the unit is working fine and the compressor is hot when touched. When the compressor stars and stops it makes a click sound, I assume that sound either comes from the relay or compressor. The click sound seems having a little bit higher then before the problem happen - or now I have paid more attention to that noise and my psychological imagination kicks in.

The touched pads on the digital control panel seem working OK, allowing me to adjust set point temperatures (off course the refrigerator is not working). I noticed that the refrigerator produces a little bit cool air (probably the compressor is producing cold air but it shut off prematurely and is not enough to make it cold)

I unplugged the power, hopefully it will reset but no joy. Condensation coils are clean from dust.

Please let me know what may cause the problem, where I can get the parts and how to fix it. It's not fun to have a bad refrigerator a week before the Thanksgiving.

Best regards,

Thank you Jake for a quick response. I suspect either the run capacitor or the start device, but I did know which one. I'm going to order and give it a try.

Again, appreciate for the help.

Its always the start device thats bad, never the run capacitor for a compressor thats doing what yours is doing.

Now, if it still does not start after you install the new start device, then its your compressor thats locked-up and you would need a new compressor.

Thanks Jake. I hope will never deal with compressor issue. I guess compressor job is not for DIY because of the R134a thing.

Correct, Compressor job can only be done by a licensed refrigeration tech.

If your compressor ever needs to be changed most refrigerators have a 5 yr. parts & labor warranty on the sealed system which includes the compressor.

Update: FedEx delivered the START-DEVICE on Monday afternoon (thought it was on Saturday for 2-day shipment but they did not count the weekends). Replaced it at 6pm and the refrigerator works like a champ again. My wife is very happy and busy with the grocery shopping for the Thanksgiving feast.

This is a great forum with fast support from Admin.

Jake, you are the man! Hat off to you and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
