Unhappy Kenmore 665.16872000 not cleaning well. not drying well

    Model Number: 665.16872000
    Brand: Sears Kenmore

Recently bought this house. Dishwasher came with it. Arms seem to be spinning (they are in a different place each time you open the DW) but dishes aren't very clean and not very dry either. Any ideas about where to start trouble shooting would be appreciated.

Sounds like 2 problems you have.

    For the not cleaning issue:
I'd check the chopper screen blade assembly first.

Here's the repair manual for your model:
    https://secured.whirlpool.com/Servic...LE/8178022.pdf

Page 17 Read 1-4 where it says this:

SERVICING COMPONENTS INSIDE THE WASH TUB
Removing the Inner Feed Tube and
    Lower Spray Arm

Then on Page 21 it starts to get into detail of how to access the rest where it says this:
Accessing Components of the Sump Assembly

It shows how to get access to the chopper screen.

    Chopper Part#8268383

If those check ok, then its possibly your motor assembly thats bad.http://www.repairclinic.com/referral.asp?R=1265&N=1018625
(Circulation pump motor with volute, shaft seal and impeller)

For the Not drying good issue:
Sounds like a bad heating element.

On this model the heating element comes with a new control board.

    Here it is:
Manufacturer part number 8194200 is RepairClinic item number 1094552

You would need an ohm meter to test for continuity on it, normal would be 11-50 ohms.

Make sure you turn the breaker off to your dishwasher first.

The heating element terminals are in the back, so you would need to pull the dishwasher out to get to them.

Let me know what you find.

Default After troubleshooting per your recommendaton

Found the heater element to be bad.

The chopper assembly appears to be OK. It was clean and when turned, seems to be turning the pump shaft as well, so coupling seems OK. There was some broken glass down around the inlet protector and in the slots of the foreign object protector. Could this cause poor cleaning?

Yes, the broken glass may be the cause of the poor cleaning.

So after you order and replace the heating element and the control board(that comes with the new heating element), you should be back in business.

as a side note, make sure you replace the board that comes with the element. It is very important due to the different wattage heater. The heater may be shaped differently too which is normal.

    Good job Daddio.

Yes, Justin is correct, the control board has to be replaced when you replace the heating element.
