    Default oven service advise(not heating)

    hello.
    over the weekend my wife put some potatoes in the oven. 15 minutes later she heard a loud pop, when she looked back at the oven she saw sparks and some smoke. smoke wasnt heavy, was un-noticable by the time i got in there(30 seconds or so). now the oven doesnt heat up but the stove top burners work just fine. its an electric oven btw. we guessed that the internal heating elements went but i wasnt about to spend $150 on those elements with out being sure. i tested the ohms on them and they were well within range. so it wasnt them. next i tested the voltage going to each terminal on the elements. the results were:
    4 teminals, going clockwise from the top left which is broil left side, 1)~60vac. 2)~60vac 3)~30vac 4)~120vac. obviously those arent correct save the bake left. so i read the wiring schematics and traced the circuit to a part called a "lock motor" (which coincendently had a nice burn mark on it) this part has the oven light connected to it but also has a wire going to another path of the circuit. does this part have an internal component that has blown causing a short in the circuit? the schematics read to when the door is shut and the controls are false. now the lock motor has a symbol for an inductor, atleast i think it is, usually an inductor is a double M shape, this is a single M shape. can this being blown cause the elements not to heat?
    i also read on this forum that it might be the circuit board or timer assembly.....how can i test this?

    notes:
    --i dont know how old the unit is. it came with the house when i bought it. and i have lived here about 5 years. it wasnt new at that time either.
    --all top burners, clock, timer, even the oven temp. display all work fine

    Ok Chris,

    Measure the voltage at the bake element terminals while the oven is ON. Put both meter probes on each of the 2 bake terminals at the same time, you should read 240 volts. If not then its your clock/control board assembly.

    Jake,

    first, thank you for your reply. i tried your advise. from reading your post i take it you mean to put both of the meter probes on 1 terminal-test- then move both probes to the other terminal-test-. i wasnt sure if you meant to put both probes on each end of the element terminals at the sametime i.e. one probe on one and the other probe on the other. anyway. i tried both methods. neither gave me a solid reading, the meter jumps all over the place. BUT when i put one probe on the terminal and the other to ground(oven metal) i get ~120. each one. which is correct. now i get these readings when i have the terminals connected to the elements themselves. when i just tested the wires without them being connected i get the readings i post above. im beyond confused.

    oh, by the way. i dont know if this matters but, when i turn on the oven i do hear a click as i would hear if it worked, all this sounds normal, just no heat......help!!!

    Yes, thats exactly the way to test your element for proper voltage reading. It should read 240 volts with the oven set to ON.

    Yes, you will get 120 volts to ground, but you need 240 volts across the element.

    So order the new clock/oven control assembly I posted a link to above and you'll be back in business.
