Its your filter housing valves that are causing it, seen this happen before.

You will need a new filter housing.

Do you know what has gone wrong with the current housing part that is causing this jack hammer sound, why it needs replaced?

Like I said, its the valves inside that housing that have gone bad, and why? I have no clue why they go bad. Some do, some don't.

Well, just curious if I pull out the current one, if the valves are just clogged or calcified or something from maybe hard water running in there, if they can just be cleaned and not have to replace the entire part? Thats what I was getting at, but I don't even know how to take it out, so I guess the repair man will let me know. Thanks for your help Jake.

Its easy to remove, just remove the kickplate and you will see how its mounted in there.

Sure you can try to soak or clean it.

Well, the repair man came out, when I was gone, and my wife let him do the work.

The invoice says...

H/D Electronic Control W/T valve and hardware assembly - $148.99
Total labor - $90.00
Tax - $13.40
Total - $252.39

Not sure what all that is...? Hopefully they were honest.

So it wasn't the filter housing?

Thats very strange, because you said with the filter removed it wasn't making that noise.

I wasn't there to see what he pulled out, all I have is that info I typed from the invoice.
Could this "Water Inlet Valve" be the same as the "H/D Electronic Control W/T Valve and Hardware Assembly" he put on the invoice?

I'm just trusting he replaced the right part, as its working now and not making a noise.
It didn't appear that he replaced the housing either. So this must be the part he replaced?

Yes, thats what I'm thinking, because thats the only valve for the water flow that costs that much.

So I guess I was wrong, but you have this new type of water inlet valve called a "smart valve" that I haven't run into as of yet on any of my service calls.
