Spin Cycle not working
Brand:
Sears Kenmore
Age:
More than 10 years
I have 90 series Kenmore and the spin cycle was on the fritz for a while. what I mean is for the last year or so the spin cycle was hit or miss all id have to do usually to get it to spin was to open and then close the lid and it would go....well yesterday it stopped doing that and started making a really loud noise once it hit the spin cycle. the washing works fine otherwise. Is this a repair that we can take care of ourselves?
Thanks in advance for any guidance

When you open the lid when its agitating does it stop? or keep agitating?
The reason I'm asking because when you open and close the lid and it started, it sounds like a bad lid switch.
But the loud noise in spin now seems it would be something else.

when I open the lid during the wash cycle it still runs, when i would open it during a spin cycle to make sure it was spinning, i would find that either it wasnt spinning or it would stop spinning because i opened the lid.
the loud noise was definitely the newest thing to come up.

Ok, this is a 1999 model washer.
I'd first check your motor coupling, that may have broke.
Here's the motor coupling for your model you can order here if needed:
Manufacturer part#285753A is RepairClinic item#1195967

Here's the video to access/change it:
If your motor coupling is fine, do you see the silver clutch turning when it should be spinning in the spin cycle?
You'd have to jump the lid switch so the washer will spin in the spin cycle, this link shows you how to do that:
http://www.applianceaid.com/dd_lidswitch.html
The silver clutch is just above the gearcase.
If its not turning, your gearcase is shot.
Here's the gearcase for your model you can order(HOW TO video is in this link):
Manufacturer part#3360629 is RepairClinic item#423

Anytime you change a clutch or gearcase its always best to change the basket drive as well, as they work together, and its just a matter of time till that goes out as well.
Here is the basket drive for your model:
Manufacturer part number 285792 is RepairClinic item number 1254
285792
Here is your clutch assembly:
Manufacturer part number 285785 is RepairClinic item number 2670
285785
This process is very involved, so if your not comfortable doing it, then have a local tech. come out, or just buy a new washer. The average life of washers today is only 8-12 years, and yours is 12 years old now.
