Default Water Dispenser problem 106.50589001

I've searched the threads for this problem, but I'm still not sure what to check. My Kenmore SxS water dispenser stopped working. For a while it worked intermittently. It seemed if you pressed it eventually you would hear a click and the water would come out. Eventually it would no longer work at all. Is this problem a solenoid or a problem with the lever? I don't want to take the dispenser mechanism apart if the problem is somewhere else. BTW the ice dispenser works fine. Thanks for any help.

Hi
On a problem like this I always start at the water inlet valve. I take a volt meter and connect it to the wiring coming to the valve, press the button and see if I get voltage or not. If voltage is present, the valve is bad,if no voltage then the problem is in the dispenser . It will have a dual valve, it should be easy to find the dispenser side by following the tubing either to the ice maker or tank in ref section. Most problems I run into ,its the valve. Good luck...

Default Valve is Good

Thanks for the tip appliancetec. I tried your suggestion, and the dispenser is bad. No voltage at the valve. I even applied voltage to the valve and it dispensed water. Is there anything to look for when I take the dispenser assembly apart?

Sounds like your getting close, check the connectors either at the top or the bottom of the door hindge for bad connections. If this looks good I would check the micro switch next , the water arm activates this switch,(2162361) this is a pretty common switch they use it a lot on all kinds of appliances,I buy them aftermarket in lots of 12. Pay close attention to the pins in the connectors ,sometimes they slide out of the plastic connector.

Default Micro Switch is OK. Now what?

I did not see your last post to check the connections at the door until today. I pried off the dispenser trim, and I was sure I had found the problem. The plastic clip and pins that hold the micro switch in place were broken. I thought the lever was not able to press the switch. I manually pressed the switch, and it still did not work. I traded microswitches with the ice dispenser which still worked.

Should I look now for a bad wire connection somewhere between the valve and the switch? Can I test to see if I'm getting power to the microswitch? I'm just looking for the next step. Also what is the best way to fix the broken plastic clip and pins that hold the microswitch? Some sort of glue or can I replace the switch holder assembly?

Thanks for the help.

Hi,

A new bracket control will fix your problem, if the switch is ok. It includes the support pins.

Here is the one for your model:
Bracket, Control

Default Still Stumped

Thanks Jake. It does look like I need the new bracket control. However, I still do not know why I cannot get the water dispenser to work. Both microswitches are good - they both work when hooked to the ice dispenser. I know the valve is good in the back of the fridge - It worked when I manually applied voltage to the valve. For some reason the valve is not getting power even though the microswitch is good. Is there something else to check or something I am missing (Bad wire connection after the microswitch no power to the microswitch)? I guess I'm a little stumped. Thanks for the help.

Yes, this does sound out of the norm, In my 19 years of appliance work, i never had a wire break or short in between the switch and the water inlet valve, but i have seen other wiring problems between other parts that were a nightmare to track down.

The best thing i can say without seeing it myself, is just trace as much wiring to the water inlet valve as you can, also check under the freezer door hinge, or under the freezer door bottom hinge, there will be a connector at one of those places, its possible a connector pin has pulled out of place, or shorted out there.

Default Stumped No More

I traced the wire from the micro switch and confirmed that it was good up to the top hinge where it goes into the main cabinet. I next went in back where I discovered that I am a sloppy DIY appliance repair person. I had not hooked the wires back up to the water valve after I tested the valve. It turns out the problem is what it seemed to be - a broken bracket assembly. I ordered it from the link Jake provided. I'm sure all will be well once the new bracket arrives. Thanks Jake for this site and the help. I will now visit your tip jar .

Good job in finding the issue, yes, that bracket control will take care of it.
