Thread: Kenmore washer Drive Block Question

Here's the tub drive block for your model:
Manufacturer part number 389140 is RepairClinic item number 2858
389140

See the one on the left, its the old one, the one on the right is the new one. It has to have those 2 ear slots. Does yours look like the one on the left or right?

It has the cut outs. Like I mentioned, it does spin, it was just squealing very loud at the begingingof the spin cycle. Now with the tub out, there is no squeal.

Here are two pictures that might help show the condition.

I need to see a picture of the top of it.

It looks pretty worn out anyways, I'd change it if I was you.

The squealing can also come from the clutch with a load on it.

Description of the symptoms I would check:

Clutch (try to spin the clutch band inside the clutch drum . It should be very hard to spin by hand)

drive block (make sure the 2 slots that engage the "EARS" in the basket drive are not worn out

Basket drive (check to make sure the 2 "EARS" at the top that engage the drive block are intact

Thanks for the advise. One question, how do i check the clutch? Do i have to pull the transmission?

Thanks for the great info! When I took the clutch out, the retainer spring that holds the brake cam driver actually fell off and was wedged under one of the shoes on the clutch!

I put everything together, but I have a bigger problem. The shaft where the spring clip attaches to is worn down somehow to where there is basically no groove left to put the spring on to hold the plastic cam driver.

Am I going to have to replace the drive tube now?

ugh,,,,I don't know,,,$125 on a 15 year old machine,,,i put it back together and I think the early squeal is that plastic cam driver dropping down on the clutch.

It is spinning great now, but just has that squeal in the beginning of the spin cycle.

i put it back together temporarily leaving that clip off since it was off all ready. it still makes the same squeal when it spins, but now it howles during the rinse cycle. did i maybe put something back together wrong?
