Default Dryer starts runs normally then stops cant be started

Hi,

I have a "Sear'$ Kenmuchmore money to repair" dryer that will start, then run normaly for about 5 -10 minutes then stop not be able to be restarted for several hours.

Depressing the PTS button produces nothing.

The dryer vent is only 6" long and there are no obstructions.

I have searched the site, but have found nothing with the same syptoms, since pushing the start button produces nothing once the dryer is in this mode.

Any thoughts ?

Toadman

P.S. sound like wirlpool has a design problem with their even heat control board. Has there ever been any recall's.... Or class action suites?

Is yours an even heat dryer? Whats the model# of your dryer?

Sounds like it could be your thermistor or the motor.

No recalls or class actions that I know of on the even heat dryers.

Jake
My model # is 110.70957990.

And took the dryer appart last night as found the following information:

* No burn components on the Even heat control board.
* It takes 20 minutes for it fail the first time.
* There is 48 VDC on the control board side of the Motor relay.
* There is 120 VAC on Output side of the Motor relay.
* When it fails there is still 120 VAC on both side of the relay until I open the door then the control board shuts it off.
* When I push the PTS button after opening closing the door I can here the motor relay click and see by the voltmeter that there is power present.
* The motor feels warm to the touch. I don't know how hot it should get.
* After 10 minute or so the Dryer can be restarted by depressing the PTS button again.

I think it is the motor, but is there anything else that could cause these symptoms to occur?

Thanks In advance,

Toadman

Sounds like you have a faulty thermistor, I would change that first.

Here is the one for your model:

Thanks for your reply, but I am still confused .

I still have power on the output of the Motor relay when is stops.

Is there another way the control board can break the current path?

Is the thermistor in the loop or does the control board just read its value, then control the motor via the relay?

The idea of replacing a $20 part verses a $100 part sound appealing.

Will the built in thermistor test confirm its failure?

Jake,
I have a Model 66932691, Kenmore series dryer, doing the same as this guys dryer. I get a sound with mine though, sounds like a coiled-electronic-spriong.... best description is that the sound gets louder louder then the dryer stops, then when I start it it makes a sproing(high pitched) then starts.... i'm thinking motor is shot. My wife and I opened it up and the inside was caked with lint... all over the motor, sitting on top the heating coil vent, all up in the roller wheels... took three dumps from my canister vac to clean it all up... the vent pipe to the outside was all clogged up too.... now when it's running I get good airflow, but i think the damage has been done... any thoughts... how much is the motor? and where are you located? I'm in Atlanta, GA...

LOL, ok now I'm confused, All I'm trying to say is its possibly the thermistor or the motor, Its hard to really pin-point it on a forum like this without me actually looking at it. But from my repairs on these, I would change the thermistor 90% of the time and it would fix it, but there's always that 10% it could be the motor.

From what BAKerns is saying, his was clogged with lots of lint, which i have seen to make the motor overheat and shut down as well, I would check for a lint clog around the motor.

Jake,

First I would really like to thank you for all your help. I guess I am trying to understand and diagnose the problem w/o spending any money. $20.00 is an easy fix. I did notice a lot of lent around the motor and I pulled some of it out, but I will get my vacuum out and clean real well.

Do you know, is the motor on these things equipped with a thermo cutout?

Thanks Jake, I'll check on the motor again, we vacuumed it pretty well but I didn't take the motor out, i would bet the motor is shot, there was a LOT of lint all over it... I am going to replace the rollers and belt(and tension arm) when I replace the motor...
Any "gotcha's" or things to be aware of when I do this?
Thanks again...
