Motor overheating
Brand:
Sears Kenmore
Age:
6-10 years
Hi, I'm having a overheating problem with the motor in the washer. The original problem, as far as I can tell, was the timer and coupler. The timer would stop at the final spin cycle at times. I would come to get the clothes out and they would still be wet. Reset the the timer and it would then spin. Then the coupler went bad. So I changed both parts at the same time. Did a test load and half way through it started to smell like something was burning and then it shut down. I have tested the wires on the motor with a meter and everything seems fine. I ran the motor off the machine to see what would happen and it seemed to be running fine. A few minutes in and I started to hear a hissing noise at the back of the machine. When I checked, it was the capacitor making the the noise. It then started to smoke and leak some fluid. I shut off the machine and ordered a capacitor. Changed the cap turned on the machine with the motor on the ground once again it seemed to be running fine for a few minutes and then started to get hot to the point where you could feel the hot air coming from it a couple feet away. I have searched and searched and can't find a solution to this problem. Do I need to change the motor or a new machine?

Yes, its the motor thats bad causing this.
Here's the motor for your model you can order here:
Whirlpool 8529935 Motor-Drve - AppliancePartsPros.com
Your machine is already 10 years old, Usually its not a good idea to start putting that much money into it at that age.
Did you buy the timer and coupler through our site? If so you can return them for full refund, less shipping, and just buy a new washer.

Either the centrifugal mechanism in the motor is not working or the motor switch is bad. The start winding in the motor is only meant to have power applied for the 1-2 seconds it takes to start the motor and then it is switched out of circuit by the centrifugal mechanism activating the motor switch. If it doesn't disconnect the start winding, it will burn up the capacitor and can damage the winding. You can test the switch and if it's bad, it can be replaced at a cost of $69.

Well, with a timer, coupler, and motor, it just about is a new machine. Other than the transmission that's all the major parts and they have good transmissions.

Thank you all for your response's. I am going to test the motor switch as suggested by fairbank and then go from there.

If the washer works ok on slow speed, then the centrifugal mechanism in the motor is working. Check continuity between the two outermost terminals of the switch. With the switch in place, it should read as a dead short. Pulling the switch away from the motor releases the switch lever arm and now the reading should be an open circuit. I suspect those start winding contacts in the switch may be welded together.

Tested the switch today and it's definitely bad. The switch arm was frozen in place. I tried to revive it but no dice. Will be ordering a new one shortly. If this doesn't fix the machine then a new one it is.

Unfortunately, the switch isn't sold as a separate part:
