Question Kenmore Top Freezer Cold, Fridge Not

I have a Kenmore model # 253.74879403 that has become ill. The top freezer is plenty cold but the fridge is warm. I pulled off the evaporator cover and found that the coils were frozen so i turned the defrost timer manually and it defrosted fine. When the compressor kicked back on the evaporator fan was just barely turning, so slow you coud stop it with your finger. Then it went into some kind of disco dance, meaning it completely stopped and then tried to turn clockwise then counter clockwise. I then took my finger and spun the blade, it picked up speed for a second or two but then stopped. Could the motor be going out? If it was turning too slow would that cause the coils to frost up beyond normal? By setting the timer to defrost manually and it actually defrosting and the compressor turning on without turning the timer manually is it safe to say that the timer is ok? Are there any tests that i can do to be sure?

THANKS,

JD

Yes, it sounds like your evaporator fan motor is bad, that would also cause more than a normal frost pattern on your coils.

The defrost system seems to be fine.

You can order that evaporator motor here:
