Default Kenmore 94152 melting synthetic fleece

I purchased a Kenmore 94152 gas dryer in April 05 to replace a 15+ yr old base model gas Kenmore. The old Kenmore never damaged any clothing. The 94152 seemed great until cold weather arrived and we started wearing and washing fleece clothing - which the 94152 promptly singed.

We've had repairmen out 3 times in the last 2 winters and they can find nothing wrong. The temps are correct, the vent runs about 8 feet and is clear, lint filter cleared regularly. We've tried every conceivable low heat setting (the old Kenmore was set to medium and stayed there for 15 years - never damaged any fleece).

The repairmen's solution - hang dry. Last week, a "service expert" at Sears 888 number admitted that this model dry doesn't have a cool enough setting to dry fleece and shouldn't be used to dry fleece at all. Glad I paid hundreds of $$$ for this POS.

Anyone else have this problem? None of my friends/family have any issues with their dryers and fleece. Sears says since the dryer's operating at spec, there's nothing they can do. I've had terrible experiences with Kenmore and Sears repairmen (dishwasher, fridge) so I don't trust a thing they say. Sorry for the long post. Any help/advice appreciated.

    Hi Swienke,

I don't know if I'm going to be much help. First, I need your whole model number. example: xxx.XXXXXXXX . When the repairman checked your vent hose did he or you go outside and make sure there was air flow thru the wall? Is it possible for you to give me some tempratures? I would be interested to know the temp at the exhaust. (with the vent hose off.) With the dryer on it's lowest heat setting I would like to know at what temp does it cycle off and then at what temp does it cycle back on.

    Hi Rick,

The complete model # is 417.94152500. I've checked the vent pipe regularly and at least one of the repairmen mentioned it specifically. There's sufficient flow to lift the louvers on the outside vent cover. During cold weather such as we have now, it's obvious - steam billows out of the vent. Also I can see all the way down to the first 90 degree turn (6ft) - all clear. I also tried completely bypassing the installed vent and just venting it out a window temporarily. No dice. Still crispy.

I didn't write down the temps but will call Sears and get them.

Assuming that the temps are at spec, what could be different between this and the old Kenmore gas dryer that causes the damage? Can a malfunction be causing part of the drum to overheat and singe on contact?

    Thanks for the help.

    Hi swienke,

Your old Kenmore dryer was built by Whirlpool and your new Kenmore is a Westinghouse style. The whirlpool is a much better machine. (just my opinion) The service tech said the temps were within "factory specs". Assuming he's correct, I would check the end of the cycle. Most dryers have a cool down period at the end of each cycle . Usualy the last 10 min. It's possible your dryer is not going into cool down leaving the drum extreemly hot when it stops.

Found notes with the temps. I was at work and thus didn't observe how or what was measured to arrive at these. I assume it's at the dryer with the vent tube detached.

    High: 140-160
    Delicate: 104

I still need to contact Sears to see if a "medium" temp was measured. Another detail: The damage most often occurs in a mixed load (ie the "colors" load with a mix of synth, blend and cotton). I'm sure the synth fleece is drying first and then baking while the cotton clothes continue to dry. But again, our old dryer never damaged anything under identical conditions, nor have I found anyone else who has this problem. Do new dryers cycle the temp differently than the old Kenmore? Any info on what the surface temp of the drum should be?
