Default Kenmore Fridge (freezer) not cooling properly

I have a seven year old Kenmore Elite side-by-side
Model #: 106.50593000 that is not getting cold .....
Coils are clean.
Ice door is closed
Seals are in good condition.
Settings are up two (7) past the normal level.

Is this the annual Kenmore appliance to bite the dust in my house?

2005 Double Oven Keypad
2006 Front loader washer gone
2007 Kenmore Elite Refridgerator??

Thanks for any help.

Default listen for noise

Is the freezer getting or staying cold? Is there any noise?

If the freezer is still cold but is starting to thaw, look inside the freezer to the back wall, if there is a considerable amount of ice buildup on the back then you need to defrost the refrigerator for 24 hours (slow method) or you can remove the back wall and defrost it manually with a hair dryer or a heat gun (takes about 45 minutes with a heat gun). if it is a defrost issue then this is only a temporary fix.

if you here a noise
do you hear any periodic buzzing or humming about 4-6 seconds, then a click followed by about 4-5 minutes of silence? If you do then the problem is the compressor, either internally or the start device (P#2204307).

Default Will try..

I will look into the defrost issue.....
I have not heard any of the sounds that you have spoke of ....

What am I looking at for cost of the new compressor??

Is this something that I can do????

I am really sick and tired of Kenmore appliances.

Is there anywhere on this blog that lists appliances by their reliability???

Thank you so much

Yes, aztraph is correct, i see more compressor start devices go bad with the issue your having than anything else, this thread explains how to check for a bad relay start device:

Default Double checking.

To Jake and Aztraph,
Thanks for the help.
I am going to order the part ASAP.

Just a quick summary.

Freezer is somewhat freezing (soft ice cream but solid ice cubes)....every so often will open it up and find that the ice cubes melted together and re-froze.

Frost is on the ice bin only(freeze/thaw) of ice cubes?

Fan for ice maker up top is going....sounds like another fan in back is going....seems like cold air coming out of both.

I have a habit of talking and typing in fragments.
Just wanted to make sure I explained thoroughly.

Thanks for all the help
Paul

Default follow jakes thread

if you follow the thread jake mentioned and take off the start device you can shake it over a clean paper towel and if what looks like pepper lands on the paper towl then it is definately the start device.

Good luck

Aztraph,
I am ordering the parts before disassembling.....after reading a few threads it sounds like the refrigerator will be out of commission if the part really fails...
Will report back my findings when I go at it....

Thanks so much ..
Paul

Default Success!

Too all,
Ordered the parts Wednesday night...on my doorstep Friday after work.
Installed Sunday morning.
Up and running great!

Ended up with a handfull of metal shavings and an old plastic housing.
Just wondering how that unit operated at all with a exploded relay??

Great site you have here.

Paul
PS. If your unit is cooling at all....wait until the new parts arrive...it will not run if you remove the old relay....it is destroyed!
