Thumbs down 2 yr. old freezer quit working!

Kenmore Frost Free Commercial (not sure of size)
Model # 253.24082101
Serial # WB53228193
Manu. Date: 8/05

Yet another 253 problem. They don't seem to have fixed the problem over the years.

Our problem started after a 2 hour power outage. Our freezer started warming up and the alarm light came on. (audible alarm was turned off) We had recently purchased a 1/2 beef and were fortunate that we had not sold our smaller upright, and transfered all our meat to the smaller freezer and fridge/freezer. I turned the control to 5-6 and it came back to life and preceded to get back to normal condition. A day or two later, the alarm light came back on and has not worked since. Fortunately, we had not moved our meat back to this freezer.
Am I looking at a sealed system problem that Sears will fix for free or a temp. control problem that I will have to do myself? Thanks in advance for any help!

Kenmore is quickly becoming my least favorite appliance brand as we also have a probable thermistor problem with our HE3 dryer also.

Kelly

Hi Kelly,

It looks like this is a frost free freezer, so lets start with is the fan in the freezer working? Is there any frost on the lower part of the back wall? Is the compressor running?

Rick, it is a frost free. The only thing that is on is the interior light and the lights and buzzer on the exterior. It's not making any kind of noise at all.

Kelly,

The first thing to check would be the cold control. Use an Ohm meter and see if there is continuity between the two connections. Remember to remove at least one of the wires. If you don't have an ohm meter, you can jump the two wires together and see if it starts. If there is continuity or it doesn't start, check for 110VAC at the compressor.

Rick,

Thanks for the suggestion. Do I remove the temp control knob from the inside or do I do this from the back of the freezer?

Kelly,

Remove the cold control from the inside of the freezer. You might have to remove the evaporator cover to get to it. I'm not sure on your model. If you take the knob off, look and see if it will pop out. There is a long capilary attached to it so you'll only be able to get it out so far but that will be enough for testing.
