Default Whirlpool Ultimate Care II washer - no drain or spin

I have a Whirlpool Ultimate Care II washer (model no LSQ8220HQ0) that fills and agitates, but will not drain or spin. A few weeks back the motor couplings/isolation were replaced. It worked for about 8 loads after that. I can hear the timer clicking along, but the motor's not running. Sometimes its smells faintly like the motor is burning.

Here's what I've checked so far:

Lid switch: Works mechanically (clicks when closed); ohmeter shows zero resistance when lid is closed, open circuit when lid is open. I have not tried to "jumper" the lid switch wiring harness to make the washer think the lid is closed.

Pump: Spins okay, nothing appears to be stuck inside.

Basket/tub: Nothing like a sock wedged in between.

    Drain hoses: No obstructions.

Timer: I replaced the old one with a new, but still had the same problem.

Motor couplings: New ones are still intact.

Motor: This is a two speed motor. Resistance through all the terminals was okay per DIY repair manual. There is no obvious burning on the windings.

Motor start switch: Continuity tests okay with ohmeter per DIY repair manual.

Gearbox, clutch, brake tube, drive block, dog cams: Seem to work, at least nothing is obviously wrong.

Capacitor: When I shorted the capacitor (discharged the built-up charge) and switched the wires to the 2 terminals (they are both red), the washer worked for about 4 loads. When I connect the ohmeter to the terminals, the resistance slowly increases (which I understand is the capacitor building a charge from the ohmeter current). If I switch the ohmeter probes, the resistance still increases slowly but with a minus (-) sign in front.

I'm out of ideas. Any light you can shed is greatly appreciated.

    Hi Martin,

Very Good checking everything, you pretty much covered all your bases.

It sounds like your Capacitor may be bad, if you say you dis-charged it and switched the wires, then it started working again for at least 4 loads.

Try taking the motor off(take pump off too), and laying it on the floor, but connected to the electrical, then turn it on in drain/spin and see if the motor starts.

    Thanks Jake.

When I took the motor off, the shaft spins in agitate mode, but not in drain or spin (same as when its all put back together). After a minute or so of testing it wouldn't spin in agitate mode either. I monkeyed around a bit (discharged the capacitor, switched the wires, made sure the electrical harness was on tight) and I could get the motor to start again, but it would not consistently run in all modes.

If I leave it on but the motor's not turning, I smell burning-motor-smell after a few minutes.
