Question Amana side by side intermittent compressor problem

    Model Number: ACD2234HRS
    Brand: Amana
    Age: 1-5 years

I have a 4 1/2 year old Amana side by side that makes a loud buzzing as if it is trying to start the compressor and then it stops and just the fan comes on. There are other times that the compressor does indeed come on but recently that stopped as well and the freezer and frig were not cooling at all. I had a repair person in and he replaced a relay near the compressor and the thermostat. The relay was replaced before the whole thing stopped and it was not starting the compressor at all, so he put the old one back and in a few weeks it got to the point as I mentioned above where it was struggling to try and start and making a loud buzzing sound but the compressor was not coming on. I shut the unit off for a day and then turned it on again and it is colling and freezing, the buzzing is happening again but thus far very infrequently. I am afraid this will escalate again, and it will fail. Additionally, I am capable of replacing relays myself.

    Hi,

This is a common problem with the Amana models, Your compressor internally is shot, You will need a new compressor.

You have a 5 yr. parts & labor warranty on it from Amana.

Contact Amana to have a tech. come out to order it for you if its under 5 yrs. old.

    How old is your refrigerator?

If you don't know post your model# and serial# and I can tell you.

    Thanks,

From the serial# it looks like a 2004 model, that seem about right?

From your warranty manual, it looks like they don't even have a 5 yr. warranty on the compressor for this model.

But you may want to contact Amana just to make sure.

Sorry to bump this old thread, but I have the same model refrigerator and the same problem as described in the original post. I just replaced the relay and am sad that the problem still persists. I am really hoping the compressor is not shot.

Here are some measurements I made:

    Compressor "TP142-AR-229-B8" "TPG1380YXA":

top pin to lower-left pin: 4.2 ohms
top pin to lower-right pin: 3.5 ohms
    lower-left to lower-right pins: 8.0 ohms

    Relay "302TFBYY" "SSP14T302TFM"

    top-left to top-right contacts: 5.5 ohms
    top-left to bottom contact: open
    top-right to bottom contact: open

Starter(?) (black box that plugs into relay with two flat contacts) "NSK85212" "c89316-12" "Shizuki"

    left to right contacts: open

    Thanks in advance!

Ok.. My unit is definitely over 5 years old (probably closer to 7). Would you recommend replacing the compressor or just get a whole new refridgerator?

Did these Amana compressors usually fail mechanically? It seems the measurements I took indicate the coils are still intact, electrically (I think).
