Its either 1 of 2 things, either your hearing it in the defrost cycle, where your defrost water is hitting the defrost heater and causing that sound, or its your inside plastic cavity contracting and retracting with the change in your refrigerator and ambient kitchen temperature.

Or the suction line of your sealed system doing it, mine does that alot too, but I've gotton used to it, mines 10 years old.

    Default kenmore fridge/bottom freez

Jake, I have the same noise as mentioned in your post about the popping/snapping or banging noise at times in my fridge/bottom freezer, made in 2003 # 596-63822200. Is there anything i can check or do to eliminate the noise or help to diagnose it. I have noticed when it makes this noise, I don't think i hear the fridge running. Can you e-mail me any info to kendeepdiver@hotmail.com Thank's Ken

    Hi Ken,

Sorry we don't email answers, your free to post here.

So everything is working fine? Just the noises when its off? When did they start? Just recently? Do you have an ice maker?

    Hi Jake,
Thanks for the reply. The refrigerator is working great. No ice maker. The noise started about 3 months ago. It's funny because the noise went away for a couple of days after my post, But it's back today. Thank's for looking into this.

So you don't have an ice maker? Or the ice maker isn't working?

Can you pinpoint where the sound is coming from? Inside? Outside? Top? Bottom? Front? Back?

Default kenmore refrigerator popping cracking sound

Not equipped with ice maker.Noise coming from inside. Hard to tell from where. There doesnt seem to be a pattern when i have been able to be next to it to catch it.I am always in a different room. Loud enough to hear. Very loud. But if i had to guess, sounds like a expansion popping/cracking type sound. Only does it once or twice,Then you won't here it for again some times for a half a day or next day.I made sure it's definitely when fridge is NOT running or when its cycling off.Maybe something in defrost cycle ? Again, Thanks for the persistence on this noise. It is very aggravating.

Yes, sounds like its happening in the defrost cycle, nothing you can do about it. Mine does the same thing, Sounds like the 4th of July.

But its really odd, I bought mine new in 1999, and seems certain times of the year I notice more than normal, then after awhile I don't hear it much anymore.

    Hi JAKE.
Thanks again for the information. Last questions. Do you think this will have anything to do with the reliability of operation in the near future or should i be looking to replace this soon. Also i know nothing can be done to eliminate it but any idea what is actually inside making the noise ? I love fire works on the 4th of July, just no in my kitchen. O well.
