Actually, this is apparently a very common problem with Kenmore ice makers and I doubt if going to the expense of replacing it is going to solve your problem! Mine is less than a year old and started exhibiting this behavior within a month of its purchase. Finding the reason for it is what brought me to this forum to begin with!

Mine does this at least once a month, and the only advice Kenmore has is to

    1. Open the freezer door
    2. Turn the ice maker off
    3. Place a large towel under the door
    4. Empty all cubes out that you can by hand
    5. Take a hair dryer to the collection basket
    6. As cubes become loose, remove them (Do not force them or use anything to pry them loose!)
    7. Repeat until you have it cleared down to the chute access at the bottom of the collect basket
    8. Try the basket release button on the side and see if the basket will release
    9. If not, close the door
    10. Hold the ice cube delivery flap open and apply the hair dryer up the chute
    11. Repeat steps 8-10 until the basket pulls up and away from the door. Do not force it!
    12. Once the basket is removed, use paper towels to dry out the chute from the freezer side and the outside
    13. Use the fryer once more to get the chute completely dry
    14. Leave the basket out of the freezer until it is completely dry!

Be careful! Wear rubber soled shoes while doing this and be careful to keep wet fingers out of the dryer's nozzle end. You're dealing with water and electricity, never a good combination!

    Pagan,

I've replaced lots of these ice makers for his issue, and it always solves the problem.

You should'nt have to do all that.

Thanks for all the responses. Since I posted about my icemaker, I see what the problem is, but don't know how to fix it. When it takes on water, the fill tube does not hit the cap completely, and some of the water spews out into the ice basket and when the ice dumps, it freezes because there is water in the basket. Any help is appreciated.

Ok, just reset your fill tube that goes into the back of your ice makers cup, it should have a little play to adjust it further into the cup, also I've seen ice get clogged in that cup, and makes the fill water splash out and into the bucket, check that too.
