Default Kenmore Elite Oven not working

    Model Number: 790.79014102
    Brand: Sears Kenmore

    Hello,

I have a 7 year old Kenmore Elite gas freestanding range. The cooktop burners are working fine; hohwever the oven is not working. I can type the temperature in on the panel, but it doesn't heat up. This happened for a few days and just last night it started to work again. Would you have idea what this would be? The preheat (top of oven burner) has worked the entire time. Please let me know if there is any other information needed,

    Thanks,

    Scott

    Hi Scott,

When you turn the oven on, look inside the bottom for an orange glow.

The problem is likely your oven igniter glow bar.

Here's the cheapest oven igniter glow bar I found for your model you can order:
    Manufacturer's Number: 5303935066

    5303935066

    Jeff explains it here:
You may even see the orange "glow plug" (called a hot surface igniter) glowing orange and so assume that it's OK. Not necessarily!! You have to measure the current/amp drawn by the igniter and compare it to this repair sheet before you can say it's OK or not. The gas valve has a bi-metal that open when a certain amount of current flows through it to heat it up. The igniter is wired in series with the gas valve. As the igniter gets older or weaker, it's resistance increases to the point where not enough current is flowing to the gas valve bimetal to open it up. As a result, the gas valve never opens up. BTW, a common symptom of the early stages of this problem is erratic temperature control in the oven due to delayed firing of the bake burner while cooking.

Thanks! I didn't know if it was that or the chip board that i have read about on here. Just out of curiosity, how did you eliminate the chip board from being the problem

You would use a volt meter and measure 120 volts at the oven igniter with the oven ON.

If 120 volts is present, your control board is fine.

Well, as I tell others, don't ever buy parts from Amazon or Ebay, this week alone two members did and both parts they ordered came defective.

Now they are fighting with the Amazon sellers who sold them these parts to get their money back after they both re-bought the parts through our site and both worked.
