Default Whirlpool Duet GHW9100LW washer drum is clunking

    Model Number: GHW9100LW
    Brand: Whirlpool
    Age: 6-10 years

When my washer spins it makes a major clunking noise at it approaches high spin cycle. Also, the tub has what looks to be a white plastic front face/flange on it. This plastic front face is not visible unless you pull back the rubber boot that seals between the tub and the front panel of the washer. This white plastic face looks like it is bolted to the tub and spins with the tub. This plastic face appears to be wearing apart because i am seeing plastic shavings in my laundry and can see where the wear is coming from on the plastic face. UPDATE: THE WHITE PIECE IS ACTUALLY TIED TO THE RUBBER BOOT AND IT DOES NOT SPIN WITH THE TUB. IT APPEARS THE TUB IT OUT OF BALANCE FOR SOME REASON AND IT HITTING THE WHITE PIECE AT HIGH SPEEDS, PEALING PLASTIC STRIPS OFF OF IT.

    My questions are:
    1. Can someone tell me how hard it would be for me to replace this white piece or do I need to get the repair man out to do it?
    2. What do you think is causing the tub to be out of balance?

I am somewhat handy with tools, but am not sure how much of a pain it would be to replace the face. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Ok, This is going to be a huge job to do if you decide to do it yourself.

Its either your rear tub bearing or inner tub spider arms have broken causing this issue.

Here's the repair manual for your Duet, follow the steps it says to do, you can print them out as well:
    www.applianceblog.com/manuals/DuetWasher.pdf

You do have a 10 yr. warranty on the inner tub from Whirlpool and Lifetime on the outer tub assembly, but you would still need to pay the labor for Whirlpool to install the parts, labor runs about $300-$400:

Here's the inner tub assembly for your model:

Here's the rear outer tub assembly(includes bearing already installed) for your model:

I have the same problem and after disassembling the tub found it to be broken inner tub spider arms. Can the spider arm assembly be purchased separately or does the basket need to be replaced?

No, the spider arm doesn't come separately, you'd need the basket.

Thanks Jake ... I was afraid of that. Does the warranty cover broken spider arms?

Read your owners manual .Under warranty information is should tell you the warranty on the tub. You can call 1-800- 253-1301. Have your model and serial number ready.
I'm not positive but I believe there is a lifetime warranty on the stainless steel tub. Since the spider is part of the tub and cannot be purchased separately , it should be covered under the tub warranty. Keep in mind that if the tub is covered the labor would not be.

Are warranties transferrable ? Or is it only for the original purchaser ?
