    Default Ice Dispenser Not Working

    Model Number: ED5FTGXKQ01
    Brand: Whirlpool
    Age: 6-10 years

My Whirlpool side by side fridge has an ice dispenser on the front of the freezer side door. It has a choice of cubed or crushed ice. Beside the ice dispenser is the water dispenser. The ice dispenser is not working however the water dispenser works fine. The lights on the door for the cubed and crushed ice light up when you push them in but no ice dispenses when you put the glass against the lever in the door. When the lever is pushed by the glass to dispense the ice, nothing happens. The motor does not start the auger turning to dispense the ice.

I have taken out the ice container and checked the motor in the back of the freezer that turns the auger and it works fine and the motor coupling works that turns the auger works fine as well.

Could there be any other reason for the ice dispenser not to work other than the switch assembly being bad? Also if the problem is the switch assembly, does it make since that it can work for the water dispenser but not for the ice dispenser?

I don't want to spend a lot of money for a switch assembly if there could be another reason by the ice dispenser does not work.

Thanks for any advice that you can give me.

The most common issue when this happens on your model is the bracket support plastic switch pins break, thus no ice.

You would need to unsnap(use a flathead screwdriver in the 2 little slots underneath the bottom frame piece to unsnap it) your front dispenser frame#23 here:

Then look at your support bracket#15 to see if the little plastic pins are broken that hold your ice and water dispenser switches in place#14.

Here is the one for your model, in case you need to order it:
