    Default Jenn-Air Range/Oven - Error Code F1-8

    Model Number: JDS9860AAB
    Brand: Jenn-Air
    Age: 6-10 years

    Hi Jake -

You've been dead on in the past so here we go. I have a Jenn-Air Range that is displaying error code F8-1. According to previous threads, it would indicate that the touch pad is defective.

    MODEL #: JDS9860AAB
    S/N: 17292706AT

I'm just looking for your opinion to confirm as the part is (as you probably know) $ 267.00. Thanks a million Jake.

I just returned from the house and now the error code in the display reads: F1-7. Any thoughts?

F1-7 is basically the same thing as F1-8.

F1-8 Shorted key (pad) in membrane switch.
Ensure ribbon cable is securely connected, inspect
ribbon cable and connector (shorts, breakage,
corrosion, etc.). If OK, replace control.

Make sure you have the ribbon connector all the way in. If so order the control panel:

if youre getting this error code and youre left with this fairly lame diagnostic which is basically, replace one expensive part and if that doesnt fix it,, replace the other expensive part,,, try this.

get under the edge of the touch pad (there are two layers here stuck together) and slowly peel it away from the backing. youll know that youre doing it right if you see a set of black rectangular lines on the face plate that correspond to another set of black rectangular lines on the backing. these are the contacts and one of them has probably shorted out. i got this error after cleaning my range and i think it got wet in between the layers. as youre peeling the layers apart you should notice a 3rd layer that helps separate to front and back. this layer is clear and it really doesnt matter which side it remains stuck to but it seems to want to stay on the back layer. now you may have to leave this to dry for several hours and you can gently rub the contacts with a dry cloth if you notice that any grease has penetrated the layer. after youre pretty sure its clean and dry, hold the face plate over the backing and try entering numbers or functions. if it works, then you have just successfully diagnosed and repaired your range. it is fair to note that the face plate will probably not stick very well when you reapply it, but if you dont have $250 laying around or you just need it to work until your new part arrives, you can just tape it back in place (i would use clear shipping tape).
there is no high voltage in these layers so you need not worry about turning the oven off while youre working on it, but there are some blogs that suggest turning the power off to your range for up to 2 hours might help it reset.

    good luck
