Default duet gas dryer chattering again, igniter glows but flame won't ignite

    Model Number: GGW9250PW3
    Brand: Whirlpool
    Age: 1-5 years

I have a Whirlpool Duet gas dryer GGW9259PW3 that is not heating. I have checked the vent and it is fine. Pulled the front bottom panel to check whether the ignitor was working… it had gone out before after when the dryer was 3 years old and I fixed it myself and so I hoped it was that… no such luck. Ignitor was coming on, glowing orange but then shutting down. After a short time it would repeat this same cycle, coming on, glowing orange but then shutting down.

One thing I noticed is that with each "glow cycle" there would be a chattering sound just before it glowed and this would continue as it glowed until the ignitor shut off and then the squeak would stop.

Rick Burton helped me with this and pointed out that there was a metal sleeve on on of the old coils that i might have missed and in fact that was the case.

When I reinstalled the new coil with the metal sleeve the dryer flame ignited and it worked again without the chattering noise happening, but periodically the chattering would happen again and it wouldn't work.

Now a month later the chattering has come back more and more frequently until today it's constant and the dryer will glow but not ignite. Back to square one. Does this sound like the coils have gone bad again or is it possible the gas valve is what's causing the problem?

Thanks for any help you can offer!

    Brian

    Hi Jake,
Just both of the ignition coils. Have tested out the vent by pulling dryer from wall disconnecting vent and running the dryer - no change. After not working yesterday and the valve/solenoid area chattering noise going constantly, igniter just glowing, I got up today and there's no chattering at all (cycle set to bulky/medium heat) dryer ran three loads without a hitch, dried perfectly, so this is something that comes and goes. When there's the chattering noise no ignition, just the glow... no chattering noise all is well.
    Thanks,
    B

Try removing the coils and reinstalling them again. Remember not to torque down the screws.

Default duet gas dryer chattering again, igniter glows but flame won't ignite

    Hi Rick,
Have changed only the coils... does the reply from Repair clinic below make sense to you?is replacing the valve difficult? I could also get the whole burner assembly for $10 more ($165 vs. $155)if that's an easier install and then have spare igniter and coils...
    Thanks,
    B

Thank you for your recent inquiry (#2389480), sent on 9/3/11 at 8:18 am, regarding your 2006 Whirlpool Dryer, model: GGW 9250 PW3.
The chattering is an indication that the plungers inside the gas valve that the solenoids lift to let the gas through are bad so the valve itself is bad. Enter your model number into the Search box at the top of our website to see all the parts available for the unit.

That sounds about right to me. It's not that difficult to change the valve but easier to replace the burner assy. Save your extra parts.
