Default Maytag Dishwasher Start Light Will Not Turn On

    Model Number: MDB8851AWB
    Brand: Maytag
    Age: 1-5 years

The start button on our 2.5 year old Maytag dishwasher will not turn on. We have turned off the circuit breaker for 5 minutes and that did nothing. We cannot run the diagnostic self-test because it requires us to use the start button. The model number is MDB8851AWB. Any suggestions?

Are the lights flashing as well? Do any lights on the control panel come on?

Did you find the tech. data sheet in the bottom behind the access panel?

Ok, well, does the tech sheet explain how to test the control panel touchpad assembly on the ribbon cable? Usually you ohm each ribbon cable pin for continuity with an ohm meter.

If you don't have a ohm meter, then you can look at the ribbon cable for burnt spots on it.

Here's the control panel touchpad assembly for your model:
    Manufacturer's Number: W10161144

Bottom line - we visually inspected and did NOT see any burn marks (at least what we could see of the ribbon wire). FYI - there was nothing about the ribbon cable in the tech sheet and my husband's not terribly mechanical, so he thought I should write a more detailed note. My husband removed the bottom plates at the base of the dishwasher and then removed all screws attaching the dishwasher INSIDE front. Then he pulled out the soap dispenser control so he could completely remove the inside front plate. He then removed the dishwasher electronic plate cover. He then looked at the ribbon wire from the electronic plate attaching to the top dishwasher controls. Part of this ribbon wire was underneath the electronic plate and so he was unable to view it. There were no burn marks. Note: it looks like the control panel is a separate part than all other electronic systems. My husband did NOT try to take this top button panel off. The ribbon wire attaches from the electronic panel to the top button panel. Now what?

Ok, well, this is a newer style Maytag that I haven't worked on as of yet, but from all the earlier Maytags most are control panel keypad issues with you see this problem arise.

So hopefully another tech. or member thats seen this issue on your model can shed some light on this, or you will need to end up calling Maytag to come out to verify the bad part.

    Default We jerry-rigged it!

Hi again.... my brother-in-law wired a momentary switch across pins 12 & 13 of the control board. The test manual told us these were the pins that regulated the on/off switch. We ran the automatic diagnostic mode (press "heated dry" six times and then press start) and it worked fine.

It's working great...except...you can't start or cancel any cycle without the door being closed. Do you have a suggestion or should I just enjoy my jerry-rigged dishwasher?
