Default Maytag Performa Washer grinds when agitating only

    Model Number: pav3300aww
    Brand: Maytag
    Age: 6-10 years

My washer makes a grinding noise only when agitating, works fine otherwise. I can grab the agitator while it is in cycle and it stops spinning. Almost feels like the transmission is working and some plastic gears may be chewed up.. not sure how old this machine is, sn# 12432731ys. Any advice? Thanks, Mike

Ok, you'll want to remove the agitator to see if the bottom base is stripped on the transmission shaft.

Take off the fabric dispenser#9 and remove the screw#4 here:

Then pull the agitator top#1 and agitator base#14 up from the transmission shaft.

Here's the agitator base for your model:

Not the agitator - I grabbed ahold of the transmission shaft top with my pliers, turned it and can feel the grinding noise...must need a transmission. I haven't looked under the cabinet but I assume the shaft coming up through the machine is the transmission and it is a one piece unit... probably not worth the investment, not sure how old the machine is, it was here when I moved in. Thanks

Ok, then yes its the transmission thats bad. This washer is a 2000 model, so yes I'd save the repair money for a new washer.

Here's the transmission for your model:
