Default Kenmore dryer starts, runs for a few minutes, then stops

    Model Number: 110.64082201
    Brand: Sears Kenmore
    Age: 6-10 years

I have read every post on this forum, and this seems to be a fairly common issue. Reading this post:

I did the same thing, the tip off the thermistor was broken, so I replaced it, reset the circuit breaker, and the dryer will start, run for about 2 or 3 minutes, then just shut off, leaving the lights on. There is no error code on the panel, just shows the time left. The vents and lint covers have been cleaned.

The heating element does start up and is nice and hot. When the dryer shuts off, the heating element goes out, and I can press the start button again, sometimes it will start up again, sometimes it wont. If it does, it only runs for a few more minutes, then shuts off again.

Also, when it does run, from the back of the dryer, it smells a little like something is burning. Not sure if that's the motor burning out, or some lint that is burning, but it may be the motor?

Anything else I can do? Is there a way to test the motor? At 8 years old, I do not want to replace the motor, but the $20 thermistor seemed like a nice try. Any other advice is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Sounds like your motor is bad. A test to see if motor is any good, hook up a test cord to terminals 4 & 5
on the motor, plug into a 120 volt outlet to see if the motor will stay running.

Here's the motor for your model you can order here:
Manufacturer part number 279787 is RepairClinic item number 158

This video shows you how to get to the motor and replace it:

Thanks Jake for the reply. Quick update since my last post: I let a full cycle run with no clothes in the dryer yesterday, and it ran all the way through. Then I threw in some wet clothes (shorts & t-shirts) and it dried it completely. Then another small load of shorts, underwear, and socks, and again it dried it completely. So I thought the dryer was back to normal.

Then today I came home and threw in a load of 5 towels, and it went back to the same thing: running for 5 minutes, then shutting off. Not sure what that would indicate? The motor ran fine yesterday on the small items, but on the big heavy items of wet towels, it wasn't up to the task.

Is that still indicating a motor problem? Thanks again for any assistance!!

Yup, that indicates a bad motor.
