Default Freezer smells like burning (i don't know what)

    Model Number: MFC25M4GW1
    Brand: Frigidaire
    Age: More than 10 years

Chest freezer smells like something burning. When I unplug it for a while and then plug in it sounds like something sparking and the compressor only runs/tries to run for 5 seconds. Compressor is too hot to touch for more than 5-8 seconds. Any ideas?

    Hi,

Bad compressor, bad relay/over load for the compressor...both...would be prime suspects!

Take the relay/overload off of the compressor (after you unplug it) and examine it for burn marks. Also check the capacitor thats next to it. This is the relay for your model:

So if I understand the info on the link Jeff sent, I can install the aftermarket 3-in-1 kit between the power cord and the compressor to replace all the factory electronics at that point. The freezer is 12 years old so I'm not too concerned about OEM parts.

BIG THANK YOU for your help. The part was $25 including shipping and freezer fired right up. Been running for 3 weeks now, no problems.
