    Default Suberba Meat Probe Problem

    Model Number: KESC307HBS4
    Brand: KitchenAid
    Age: 6-10 years

My 6 year old convection oven's meat probe has gotten unreliable. It sometimes kicks out early, sometimes late. On Thanksgiving, I undercooked a turkey because of it. It has generally been reliable in this operation.

Today I measured the probe resistance vs. temp and it seems to operate normally (temp-F/Kohms): 200/4.0, 160/8.4, 150/10.0, 130/14.0, 120/18.2, but I can't find a spec for it. It does not seem to have any intermittencies.

I just cooked a cup of water with probe set to 130, convection oven at 300. As soon as it stopped, water was 140.

No evidence of corrosion on the plug, I haven't pulled the oven out to look at the jack, but there is a hinged steel cover over it so I'd be surprised of any problems. Display indications are normal although sometimes it seems the probe reaches temp fast without indicating the 130 after Lo.

    ANy suggestions are are appreciated

    thanks lots ..bb

Here's the chart for the meat probe:

    150 ------------9938
    156.2 ----------8846
    165.2 ----------7456

It looks like yours starts out fine on the lower temps, but as the temp. rises it gets futher off.

Here's the meat probe for your model you can order here:

Jake, thanks for the factory data. You are correct on your observation. I know temp data is very hard to measure accurately. For these thermistors, at the higher temps, a small change in resistance indicates a larger change in temperature. (put another way, a larger change in temp produces a small resistance change) If I plot the factory data over my data, they seem to agree within +/-3F over the critical 130-160 range and the shape of the curves match very closely. So I'm not yet ready to rule out the probe (especially for $100). Click image for larger version.

One possibility is the probe has a problem when it is in the 325F oven heat. I measured it at room temperature outside the oven.

    thanks again..bb

Yes, I agree, now here in Oregon I rarely ran into any meat probe issues, so if you replace the meat probe and it doesn't solve the problem you have 365 days to return it for a full refund if you order it from the link I posted to it.
