Kenmore Elite HE3 Dryer does not start
I have a Kenmore Elite HE3 dryer model 110.82822102 purchased in 2003 that just stopped working. Pressing any cycle and holding down Start results in a single beep and then a click. I read some of the threads in this forum and found out how to get into Diagnostic Test Mode. When I enter diagnostic mode 88 shows as expected on the display and all the LEDs come on. Every button works except the Timed Dry cycle. Pressing it does nothing (no beep and the LED does not turn off). I also verified that in normal operating mode the Timed Dry cycle button does not work (the LED does not come on).
Given those symptoms is it more likely to be the console electronics or machine electronics?

Sounds like the user interface is bad.
Your Kenmore is the exact identical to the Whirlpool Duet.
WON’T START CYCLE
WHEN START BUTTON
1. If number display flashes, check to be sure the door is
completely shut, and press and hold down Start for
about 1 second.
2. See TEST #2, page 3.
3. See TEST #6, page 6.
Here's the simplified diagnostics sheet(Page 7 tells how to take the bottom panel off) and the TEST #2 AND TEST #6:
Here is the online repair manual for the Kenmore/Whirlpool Duet dryer:
Give it time to download. Page 6-3 is the trouble shooting section.
It shows how to get access to the console panel keypad assembly on page 4-2 through 4-4 of the repair manual.
Here's the control panel touchpad user interface(White) for your model:
