Default Need help! Maytag fridge/top freezer w/ ice maker leaking water

    Model Number: M1BXXGMY00
    Brand: Maytag
    Age: 1-5 years

My fridge is just over 1 yr old and the warranty is expired. Of course then we start having problems. Our freezer has been leaking water onto the bottom shelf. Sheets of ice collect and then it starts leaking water out of it. I have cleared it of ice several times and checked all connections. It leaks when ice maker is off and gets worse when it's on. What can I do? Please help as we don't have the money to call someone to repair it.

Ice on the floor of the freezer section or water leaking on floor by the freezer door on a SXS or Bottom Mount or water leaking into the fresh food section on a Top Mount, is an indication of a blocked defrost drain line. Remove the evaporator cover (freezer section back wall). The evaporator sits in a defrost pan with the drain hole located bottom center. Use a hair dryer to defrost the ice over the drain hole and then run very hot water through it to clean it out. A turkey baster works well. Most of the time that will solve the problem.

Ok so I'm going to try this. I will unplug but do I also need to shut water off before I try this?

No, you don't have to shut the water off but you might have to remove the ice maker to get the evaporator cover off.

Thanks for your help! It took quite a while for me to get everything figured out. That was the problem. There was an ice plug in the drain and a LOT of ice in that whole area. I melted all the ice and poured water but after a (very) long time, it still wasn't draining. I finally went to check the drip pan under the fridge and found the bottom of the tube that led to it was pinched off and as soon as I moved it, water came out. After that, the water flowed through freely. Thanks again.
