My 1994 Frigidaire washer: fw9957aw1 left clothes wet. I adjusted setting to spin cycle but it barely moved then stopped and made a loud grinding sound. i took off the front panel and noticed that there was black soot on the ground and around the belt. I was able to turn the belt assembly in one direction but could not turn inthe other.

i spoke with someone in an appliance part store who believes that the transmission is defectiveand is not worth fixing. is there a test i can do to confirm that the tran has failed?

    thanks

    Hi,

    **fw9957aw1**

Model# won't come up for me.

Remove power, remove/slip off the drive belt....the large pulley in the middle should turn in one direction for agitation and in the other direction for spin....if this pulley locks up the tranny is suspect and very possibly seized up in the spin direction.

Jeff, appreciate yourresponse/call on the problem....

removed belt and turned pulley however it will only turn freelyin the one direction -when i turn it in the other directionthe transmission turns as well.

i was trying to verify the model # with the eletrical skiematicdiagram inside the yellow envelope but it only statedpart# D148226.canadian parts may be different than USA?

    thanks

It should....one direction is agitation and only the pulley turns....freely....in the other direction the whole tranny/basket should turn...fairly freely. If black gookus is leaking out where the tranny enters the outer tank or rusting on the tranny bottom ( above the pulley ) is noticed = problem.

The tag on the washer is the only reliable place and the Canadian model numbers will often be different than the US model numbers but the part may be the same.

    **fw9957aw1**

    -Some-that I see are 3 letters first....

That will be the spin and should be normal. The inner tub is usually attached to the transmission shaft so when the transmission turns, so does the tub. But could the whole thing be turned by turning the transmission pulley or was it binding?

Sometimes, but more importantly the parts lists are not usually online so we can't look it up to see exactly which machine design you have.

FW957AW1 is a good model number for a 1992 Canadian Frigidaire washer.

    JFYI

Thanks Jeff/Dan - the model No. is as stated thanks for confirming.your right I bought it in 1993 not '94.

As for the black stuff it is from the belt burning i guess, no gue running out.

when I turn the pulley, the whole tub turns as well - no binding taking place.

Is this a good sign or am i still SOL?

    thanks

    Good so far!

I'd replace the belt, check the idler pulley ( keeps tension on the belt )and give it a shot!

If the transmission isn't binding, I agree.
