Washing machine started making this clicking sound when it should be draining. Then it started smelling hot.

I am guessing that it is the water pump since it spins just fine.

How do you replace the pump? From the back or the bottom?

Okay--this is a late model Kenmore.

    Let me begin by asking:

Does the washer drain at all? This type of washer cannot spin unless most of the water has been drained.

Check your drain hose for kinks or bends. If the drain hose drains into a sink basin, make sure that there isn't a "lint sock" or strainer on the hose. These can become so plugged that the washer cannot drain adequately.

The tear down is very easy to gain access to the drain pump. I know that our Moderator--Jeff-- has a photo link somewhere. I'll look for that while you check the hose.

Thanks for all of the help.

My washer drains into a wall water supply/drain like most new construction homes. It does drain. And it does spin. However, there is a regular loud click as the tub spins and drains. I believe something has gotten into the pump somehow. Do you think it could be something else?

I looked at Sears parts online and they have an entire pump for $40. If it is the pump, will I need any additional parts to replace the pump?

Check inside thespin basket with a flashlight--look for something stuck in one of the holes.
