I am considering a Whirlpool Duet front loader. The depth of the washer is 31.5", considerably deeper than my current washer. I noticed that the installation manual suggests having an additional 4" clearance behind the washer. I don't have 4" behind the washer. All of the other clearances are fine, in front, next to, and open door. I know I need enough clearance behind the washer for the hose and cords, but is 4" really necessary? Is the 4" only for closet and recessed area installations? Our washer and dryer area is a pass through area between the garage and the rest of the house.
