Default from not enough to too much hot water

My mother's HWH just quit heating. It is an older cabinet model State Manufacturing I believe. I checked the elements and both showed ok (continuity wise at least). Power was going to the upper themostat, but not elements. I found and clicked the reset button and the unit started working. I am thinking all is well........

then today my sister called ( I am an hour away ) today and said the water heated cabinet is hot to the touch on top and the water is really hot. Temp on the thermostat was set at 130 and I did not change it.

I have asked her to check the actual water temp coming out but have not heard back yet. I am now thinking the thermostat is bad.

Sorry I do not have the model / serial numbers as I did not write them down, thinking the thing was ok.

Does Lowes or Home depot sell thermostats or will i need a plumbing house? I ask because I will have to go over this weekend and most plumbing houses will be closed. ( I know the model serial ## are crucial.

Also, I read another thread about checking continuity on the thermostat ...how is this done and will it help me at this point since the unit is working...apparently too good

Thanks,

Hi,

When that button on the upper thermostat pops out then stops heating properly, then you reset it and it doesn't resolve the problem, or another problem develops, you will need to change that upper thermostat.

To ohm the thermostats you would need to turn the breaker off to your water heater then this describes the rest:
