Default Removing metal cover on older AO Smith to get thermocouple off

I have a late '80's OA Smith Conservationalist of which the pilot goes out every other day. I'm needing to try first to change the thermocouple. But, I cannot get inside the aluminum cover to remove and reset the thermocouple. It seems to be spot welded on all sides. Does anyone know how to remove and reallign the themocouple on these models?
