whirlpool ultimate care II
in spin cycle, there is a loud clang sound near bottom of machine. it sounds like it is metal on metal at one place each rotation of the agitator rotation.
the machine does spin the clothes, but much slower.
i am wondering if the loud sound (like metal on metal) is a bearing connecting motor to other moving parts.

Hi,
Whats the model# of your washer? Its located inside the lid.
Usually that sound is the gearcase going out.
You should have a 5 yr. parts warranty on the gearcase from Whirlpool.
How old is your washer? If you don't know please post the serial# and I can tell you.

there is a # imprinted on the back cover-this might be the serial # 3357978.
i bought the home and the washer came w/home, so i do not know when the washer was bought-i would estimate it to be around the year 2000.
if it is the gearcase that is out, how do i go about getting replacement part. i owuld like to install myself if possible to save $.
thanks-kent

Ok Kent,
The model and serial# tag is located inside the lid, open the lid and you should see in on the top where you load your clothes inside the tub.

Perfect!
Ok your washer was made in 1999.
Here's the gearcase for your model:
Gearcase for direct drive washer(The manufacturer has replaced part number 3360630 with this item, part number 3360629.)

Here is the basket drive for your model:
Manufacturer part number 285792 is RepairClinic item number 1254
285792
Here is your clutch assembly:
Manufacturer part number 285785 is RepairClinic item number 2670
285785
Here's a good help link to access these parts:
Whirlpool, Kenmore, Roper, Estate, Kitchen Aid: Direct Drive Spin Tube
Its basically in need of a overhaul once one of the major parts go out like the gearcase, which the other parts involved, basket drive/clutch and gearcase are all wearing out too.
Since your washer is already 10 years old, its probably better to just save your repair money for a new washer, but its up to you.
