Dryer won't ignite
Brand:
Whirlpool
Age:
More than 10 years
Ignitor won't come on. Checked it with ohmeter and it registered 99 ohms. Removed the flame sensor. Registers .3ohms when cool. When warmed over a candle, it clicks in less than a minute, and the reading goes to 1. I jumped the flame sensor wires, and the ignotor still will not ignite. Any further suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

On a gas dryer the thermal fuse and high limit thermostat are in line with the gas valve. Use your ohmmeter to check both for continuity. The thermal fuse is located on the blower housing behind the back panel and the hi limit thermostat is on the heater box. If either one is open you should clean out the vent hose and vent and make sure you have good air flow coming out of the dryer. Check the fuse first. It's the most common part to fail.

Rick,
Thanks for your quick reply. I tested the thermal fuse and there is no continuity. I have not tested the thermostat. To make sure its just the fuse, should I jump the wires and see if the ignitor comes on?
Thanks,
Rob

Yes, you can short the two wires on the thermal fuse together and the igniter will come on.

Since all is fine I would like to ask here,
Besides a clogged vent are there anymore causes that would make the thermal fuse go bad?
I searched the site and can not find any other causes.
Would it be possible that just old age would pop the fuse or can there be something else?
Thanks in advance.

Like all parts, they can wear out over time.
