    Default Kitchenaid Washer Won't spin.

    I have a kitchen aid washer # KAWE450VWH
I washed all day Saturday and then on Sunday, my wife threw a load in and and it stopped working and had a smell like burnt electrical smell. It was pretty strong. It looked like it did that when it was about to pump the water out and spin. Anyways tried to start it up , but nothing. I let it sit. Later, like a couple hours, i went down and tried the spin cycle again. It worked. So I put in another load and it stopped again. I caught it when it stopped. I heard a humming then a click followed by the strong smell of the burnt electric smell. I thought it might be a timer because it smelled like it was coming from up there. I did have a problem with the timer when the mother in law left it for us. she broke the knob off the timer and instead of pushing the shaft in and out, she left it out all the time and just turned it. Don't know if that might make a timer go bad and cause the problems I'm having. I just fixed my dryer last week getting helpful tips from here. I just can't believe my washer goes a week later. Hope you can help. Thanks.

I have seen this happen many times, I start checking the motor connector first for burned spots on the motor connector contacts.

This link explains more about what it could be:

When it stopped the second time was it just about to go in the spin cycle, or did it just stop while it was in the wash cycle?

Here is the timer, motor, motor capacitor for your model:

    Ok,

Sounds like an intermittent problem, those are hard to diagnose online.

The best bet in fixing it yourself is to get the official repair manual for it:
Repair manual for Whirlpool - Kitchen Aid - Kenmore - Roper - Estate direct drive washing machines.

Ok, I the motor back in but left the motor coupler out so it doesn't engage. I ran a load with any clothes. It filled with water and started the to agitate. I thought it agitated good so I move the timer up to the spin part. The pump worked as it was pumping into the tube. So then I when back to the beginning of the cycle because I thought I must have missed the bad spot. Anyways restarted it, then came the buzz like hum and the motor wasn't moving. It started smoking at the motor so I turn it off. It was the electrical smell I was getting in my first post. So, am I safe to say that motor is bad?

Without testing it with a volt/ohm meter, its a 50-50 chance it could be.

It would explain in that repair manual all about what to test to pin-point the proper part.
