Default Whirlpool GST9675JQ1 Won't Spin

Washer won't spin, but does everything else. Coupling looks good. Transmission seems strong and smooth in both directions. When turning the coupling by hand with the transmission out, I can't restrain the shaft from turning.

Thought maybe there was significant sludge/trash between the inner and outer tubs, so I decided to remove the inner tub. Removed the cabinet, tub cover, agitator, and spanner nut; but can NOT get the tub out. From all I've been able to find, it should come out now. But I've been lifting up on the tub and beating on the shaft with a large pipe wrench, and it's not budging. I don't want to bang on it any harder, as I don't want to break anything. BTW, by hand, the tub turns easily in the agitate direction, but it's quite difficult in the spin direction. I think it's about five years old, but time flies these days.

1. What else might be causing the washer not to spin?

2. How do I get that cotton-picking tub out?

3. Any other advice?

Thanks.

Hi,

So when the washer goes into the spin cycle, what happens? Does the motor turn but not the tub? Or is it dead silent?

Those tubs can be really hard to get out, keep trying, have someone help you.

The motor runs, but not the tub.

So there's nothing else holding the tub on? I had another man pull up on the tub, while I beat on the center shaft and drive block with a large pipe wrench, for quite a while.

Yes, this link from Jeff may help you with getting the inner tub basket out as well:
http://www.applianceaid.com/procedures.html#basket

Usually what I find when the motor turns but it won't spin and the motor coupler is good, and you can turn the gearcase(transmission) shaft in the spin direction and it turns the tub, that its your basket drive and clutch that are bad.

Here is the basket drive for your model:
Manufacturer part number 285792 is RepairClinic item number 1254

Here is your clutch assembly:
Manufacturer part number 285785 is RepairClinic item number 2670

Thanks, Jake. Well I didn't know what the parts were called, but when I had the motor and transmission off, I inspected all the parts that were visible. No parts were broken, nothing was dirty/oily, and nothing looked unduly worn.

Before I lay out $150, is there a way to tell if these parts are actually bad?

Nope, not really. But its always fixed it for me.

If it doesn't work and you order the parts from the links I posted, you can return them within 90 days for a full refund.

The real story...

Okay, I took somebody else's word for what was happening, instead of testing for myself. Shame on me.

I've hooked the lid switch back up, with the cabinet removed. The agitator does turn, but VERY slowly. (Did I say "very slowly?") Is the tub supposed to turn while the agitator is agitating? It does not turn. The drain pump works well. And of course the spin doesn't work. When I had the motor and transmission off, nothing appeared to be broken or badly worn, and there was no grease, oil, dirt, or goo in the parts. The coupling looks good.

No, the tub should not turn while its agitating.

Ok, with the new story here, sounds like a bad transmission, but to tell you the truth, whenever I change a transmission I AWAYS change the basket drive and clutch as well, so I don't have to go back to the customers house a few weeks later to keep changing one component at a time, most of the time the customer says, it would cost more to fix it than its worth, and guess what I say,

YOUR 100% RIGHT, GO BUY A NEW MACHINE!!!

Don't like an appliance nickle and dime ya to death.
