Default Whirlpool LA5668XTW1 washer excessive vibration

Hello:

I have a Whirlpool LA5668XTW1 washing machine, bought new in 1993. It's hopping across the floor during final spin cycle and vibrates like heck. The machine is level.

I see that this seems to be a fairly common problem with some washers but the solution seems to vary depending on model. I've taken the cabinet off and can't see any apparent damage. Now I'm at the spanner nut and see that I need a special tool. I hope to find one locally today so that I won't waste a few more days waiting for shipping.

My first question is this - on this model, does the spanner nut loosen like a conventional nut (counter clockwise) or reverse thread way (clockwise)? I've seen equal opinions both ways. Also, I can turn the basket/tub with my hands which makes me wonder if I need to brace it somehow while trying to loosen the nut?

Once I get the spanner nut off, what do you suggest I look for first?

Many thanks
Glenn

Hi Glenn,

The common problem that happens when its vibrating that bad is the suspension pads are worn out, so you shouldn't have to worry about removing the tub.

But the tub nut is reversed threaded, so it comes off clockwise.

The suspension pads are #18 here:

You can order them here:
Manufacturer's Number: 285744

Jeff explains how to change them here:

Thanks I'll give it a shot. Is it really necessary to remove the pump and motor as Jeff describes? Is that an easy job?

Do you think the upper pads (#16) will also need to be replaced? Will I need to remove the tub to replace those?

Thanks again.

Yes, very easy, they are just clipped in place, you just unsnap the clips. The motor clips may have to screws in each clip, but just remove those, then unsnap the motor clips.

No, I've never needed to change them.

Nope, not at all.
