Default Whirlpool Gold Model GS2SHGXLS01 Fridge

I replaced my relay/starter a few months ago, and my fridge was working fine until just recently....My fridge's compressor now stops unexpectedly. When I replug the fridge, it will start up again with cold air, but then it will stop shortly after. If I let the compressor cool after a few hours, it will run for a longer time, but will stop again after 3-4 hours.

I checked the fan and it seems to be running at a medium pace when the compressor starts. I'm not sure if this medium pace is normal, but I've never had any problems before. I did a mini-experiment and added an external fan to help cool the compressor, and my fridge doesn't stop!

Do you have any ideas on how to effectively cool my compressor? The fan seems to be working fine from what I can tell, so this is really puzzling to me. Then again, I'm not sure how fast or slow it is supposed to be.

Clean condensor coils and make sure back is on refrigerator. You may need to replace cond. fan motor.

This is probably a stupid question: Can you tell me exactly where the condenser coils are located on my model?

Here's the parts diagram for your model:
    GS2SHGXLS01
Diagram#2 Part location#16 is your kickplate, just open both doors, then that pulls to unsnap, pull hard.

The condenser coils are behind that kickplate on the bottom right side.

Diagram#12 part location#24 is your condenser fan motor, in the back of your refrigerator.

OK, I cleaned the condensor coils, but it still shuts off after a couple of hours.

Your other suggestion was to replace the condensor motor fan. Well, like I mentioned before, the fan seems to be working at a medium speed. I mean it's definitely not "High", but I don't really have any baseline to go against.

Should the fan be working at a pretty high speed? I guess I'm a little hesitant at spending over $70 for a new motor, and it will end up being the same speed.

    Thanks for any help!

OK, I think we need to back up a little. In your original post you stated; "My fridge's compressor now stops unexpectedly", That's normal unless it doesn't turn back on. So I'm assuming you're having a cooling problem. You also stated that you unplugged it. For how long? Then you plugged it back in and it shut off shortly after. How long after? In your last post you said it shut off after a couple hours. That's normal too unless ,again, it's not turning back on. When you did your experiment with the external fan, did the refrigerator operate normally? Were the temperatures correct in the freezer and the refrigerator? Did you notice any frost on the back wall of the freezer? I don't want you to spend $70+ either if we're not going to fix the problem. Over the years I've found there aren't too many short cuts you can take when it comes to diagnosing a cooling problem. Sorry for all the questions but I want to give you a correct diagnosis.

Thanks for the response. Right, the compressor stops and never turns back on and my assumption is that it's overheated. When I unplug it, if I plug it in right away, it will stop after 10 minutes or so. But if I unplug it and let the compressor cool for 3-4 hours and plug it back in, it will work for a couple of hours before it shuts down again and never turns back on.

With the external fan on "High", the compressor turns on and off like normal and the temperature is perfect in the freezer and the refridgerator. BUT, if I put the external fan on "Low", it's not enough and I get the same problem with the compressor never turning back on. I've tried this experiment several times and have had consistent results. It almost seems like I need a high powered condensor fan to prevent this, but I wonder what the root cause is in the first place?

OK, With what you've told me I believe the condensor fan motor is not up to speed. Your refrigerator shows all the signs of poor air flow across the condensor and compressor. You said that you replaced the overload and relay several months ago. Thats what usually burns them out. Your new one may have been weakened from all the heat. It's also important that the back panel be on. Thats what directs the air flow. I believe a new fan motor will fix the problem. I know if you purchase the part on this site, Jake gives you 30 days to return it if it doesn't fix it. I'm about 90% positive it will.

I've received the part and taken out the old motor. Any idea on how to take the fan off of my original motor? It seems to be stuck.

There should be a square type piece of metal that screws down the motor shaft. Thats what holds the fan blade on. Remove it and the fan should come off.
