Default Whirlpool 21 ft^3 top freezer cooling issue...

    Model Number: 106.71192107
    Brand: Whirlpool

    Hi,

I think it is from 2002, so it is about 8 years old now.

I've had problems with it and defrosting many times because the hole in the freezer would get plugged up, but I finally ran some copper off the defrost element a year or two ago and that solved that issue.

Refrigerator section not cold enough is the problem now. Fan is running in the freezer, things in the freezer are still frozen.

I looked to see if there was any freeze up in the freezer (usually tons of ice under the floor of the freezer), but there wasn't any. I took apart the freezer area and there was some water and ice, but not much. I dried it out and put it back together.

Fan is running and it does cool. After plugging it back in, it cooled the freezer down to 7 deg F (measured the air in the freezer).

I have a cup of water with a temp sensor it in and it is still hanging around 46 deg F in the fresh food section.

The coils in the bottom were a bit dust and dirt caked. I blew them off with my compressor so they are clean now.

Anything else I should look at? Or just wait to see if the cup of water will drop temp. So far it is staying at 46 deg F...

It is also making some odd noises, not loud, just odd. dull whirring type of noises.

    Thanks,

    Alan

    Hi,

I guess it is a Kenmore. I took the back lower cover off while plugged in and the fan was running, but the compressor was pretty hot. I unplugged it and cooled it off with a fan. I plugged it back in and it quickly cooled the freezer section from 20 deg F down to 5 deg F. I haven't been watching it too closely and I'm not sure how long it has been running, but it seems like it has been running awhile. It is at -5 deg F in the freezer. The FF section is at 42 deg F. I had the FF temp setting up at 4, but I ended up turning it down to two so it would shut off for awhile and let the compressor cool off. Perhaps I am just trying to run it too high. I will return it to the factory setting of 3 before going to bed and we'll see what it is like by morning.

    Thanks,

    Alan

    Hi Alan,

It sounds like your air duct vents into the refrigerator section may be partially clogged.

You'll need to take the freezer bottom#25 here off:

And also the back panel#16 off as well and check those, should be 2 vents.

    Hi Jake,

Thanks for the help - I know the vents you are talking about - I'll check them out.

    Hi Jake,

Today it has been working well. It had my glass of water with the sensor in it at 36 deg F right now and the min/max on it is 34/38. Maybe it was just dirty and cleaning it up made a huge difference.

Hopefully it isn't on its last leg, but I'll keep running it and see what happens. I would have liked to find a bigger culprit than dust and dirt.

    Thanks,

    Alan
