How to troubleshoot
Brand:
Whirlpool
Age:
6-10 years
I have a Whirlpool fridge model GS5SHAXNQ00 . It no longer cools. Can someone point me to a thread that will help me troubleshoot if the issue is a relay or other small problem vs a bad compressor?
Thanks very much!!

Hi,
Sounds like your compressor start relay went out.
Follow this guide to check it to see if it rattles:
[FIXED] How to replace a (Whirlpool/Kenmore Model 106) Refrigerator Start Relay
Does yours look like this:
Start Device 2319792 Order now for same day shipping. 365 day return policy. RepairClinic.com
or this:
Relay and Overload Kit 4387835 Order now for same day shipping. 365 day return policy. RepairClinic.com
Yes, it can still be bad if it doesn't rattle inside, but you would need a ohm meter to test it for continuity with the refrigerator unplugged.

Thanks for the info Jake. I pulled the start relay.
When I initially shook the relay, it sounded like there was a tiny piece of something rattling around. I shook if for a few seconds, barely hearing anything and then the rattling stopped. Maybe the small piece of something got wedged inside.
If I ordered the part and it does not correct the problem, it is returnable?
Also, there was a metal tension wire that held the relay in place. Can you tell me what it hooked on toward the front of the fridge. Of course you cant see back there but I cant feel where it should connect.
Thanks!

I installed the new start relay this morning and the fridge fired right up! Thanks for your great advise and service.
If anyone has a picture of how the clip that holds the relay in available, I would like to see it to make sure that I have it on correctly. I assume that the relay could vibrate loose over time which is why the clip is used.
Thanks again!

Sounds good Steve,
For the clip: If you can take a picture of it and upload it here as an attachment I can show you.
