Expensive refrigerators have expensive parts and that's what makes them expensive refrigerators.

Yes, Rick is correct, some people buy the extended warranty service contract, which would cover the price of this part, so either way your paying for just that part, or yearly to keep a service contract going.
Nothing is made like the old reliable refrigerators of the past unfortunately.

Okay, fortunately I do have an extended contract. I am just reluctant to have a service man tear-down my freezer when I can do it myself. Kind of figured the extended contract would be nice for a really big ticket item. So having said that, is it possible to contact the company providing the extended service and tell them to just send me the part that I need. I actually already know the answer here but I hope that somebody knows a trick or two that will achieve my goal.
Thanks,

Not unless you can become an authorized Whirlpool repair company. You can always call and ask. The worst they can say is no.

I want to contribute to the discussion about testing the optics. As noted previous on this thread, my refrigerator model has a different style of optics then some. After removing the jamb ice my ice maker begin working normal. In checking my optics, I never see any LED on or blinking. Just want to remind others that not all optics can be tested with the blink test.
