Default Whirlpool sideXside In-door Ice maker suspected optic problem

    Model Number: GSF26C5EXW00
    Brand: Whirlpool
    Age: 1-5 years

Greetings, My first post here but understand the nature of self-help forums, and truly appreciate the expertise available from them.

The MFG date stamped on refrigerator is 6-10. We bought it new from Lowe's and have been mostly satisfied with it. However the ice maker has always seem temperamental. During extended leaves (i.e. vacation, etc) we would turn off the ice maker. After turning the ice maker back on it would take about 48-72 hours before any ice would make. The owners manual mentions having to wait 24 hours but I think that was having to do with a new install and waiting for the freezer temp to chill. At any rate 72 hours is too long to wait. That has always been the norm up till recent, now it's been 4 days and still no ice. This last scenario is the result from simply removing the ice bin to clean it and then within 15 minutes replace it.

I have read some diagnostic guides on optic style ice makers and believe that one of my boards may be bad. The guide gives several LED status to determine the possible problem. However nothing is mentioned about the LED being always off, which is what I am getting. No matter if I close the flapper door or leave it extended. Also, what about the two freezer side switches along the top door jamb. One will turn off the freezer light and the other one, I have no idea what it does. Does the position of either one of these door switches have an effect on the optic circuit? Can anyone confirm that I should be able to visibly see the LED emit light?

I am very pro-active in repairing this problem myself. I am very eager to respond to any questions, tips, hints, or suggestions from any forum reader. Thanks in advance for your help.

Ok, yours is a newer model and it has different optics boards in it from the ones I posted the test to years ago, I haven't been able to come up with testing procedure for the new ones as of yet.

What position is the ejector arm fingers pointing? Straight Up? Straight down in the tray? Pointing at you, or slightly above you?

Also feel inside the ice maker tray and see if you feel any water in the cube slots.

    Jake,

I believe I have found the problem but not the cause. After taking off the ice maker housing I discovered that a row of ice did not clear the mold during harvest. So when the next harvest cycle attempted to eject it jamb with the previous batch. I removed the all of the ice and now waiting to see what happens. I also noticed that there was a crack in the plastic frame that houses the ice maker assembly. This frame supports the assembly to the refrigerator door. I was able to make a temporary fix but I will probably have to replace this plastic housing. I hope this is something that can be purchased separately.

So as to the cause of the ice not properly ejecting. On the on-set of my problem, I noticed that a clump of ice was stuck in the ejector door preventing it to fully close after getting ice. This was noticed when I saw a puddle of water in the ice/water tray area. At this point we still had ice in the bin so didn't think there was a problem. It was several days later that I noticed the ice bin was empty. So with the ejector door staying open room temp air was filtrating the ice maker compartment causing the ice harvest cycle to jamb. Does this scenario seem correct??

I will post the results after the ice maker has time to cycle. Thanks for your help Jake.

That makes perfect sense to me. What part is broken for the ice dispenser?

    Here's the diagram of yours:

This doesn't appear to be the right view. My ice maker is housed above this area. The part that is broken is a plastic frame (for lack of better term) that the actual ice maker assembly fits into. Then the frame, along with the ice maker assembly is screwed to the door. I can take a photo and post it, unless you have another area depicting the ice maker.

    Thanks for all your help.

This diagram goes on the freezer door, but its your ice bucket assembly, the ice maker itself doesn't go on the door.

The ice maker is working normal now. The area that is broken is depicted in photo 3. The plastic housing that I mentioned before can be seen in photos 2, 3, & 4.

    Thanks again for your help.

Thanks for the diagram. I agree, #17 is the part that I need. Is the number that you listed (W10251080) the actual part that I need, or is that the number of the ice maker that fits my frig.
