Fridge/Freezer not cooling
Brand:
Whirlpool
Age:
1-5 years
So I've been having problems with my fridge over the last couple days. I've tried troubleshooting with all of the info I've found but I'm not having success.
If someone can help I would greatly appreciate it.
I came home from work one day and the freezer temp was 65 degrees. I tore it apart and started troubleshooting. When I pulled the back panel off the freezer there as no ice/frost build-up on the coils.
My first diagnosis lead me to the bimetal thermostat because it measured CLOSED and I thought it should be OPEN. I bought a new one and replaced it.
Now I've reassembled everything and turned it on. It chills down to 0 degrees in the freezer before the compressor kicks off. It seemed to be working fine. Problem is... I woke up this morning and it was back to 55 degrees in the freezer.
I was able to check the heater coil and it measured 30 ohm's plus I can put the unit in self-test mode and the defrost heater fires right up. Now I'm curious if it could be the thermostat in the fridge compartment or the defrost control board. I'm plenty capable to swap out the parts - I just don't know which parts to swap.
Thanks again!

Brandon, unplug the unit and remove the lower back panel. Remove the relay and overload from the side of the compressor (you may have to remove a bail wire holding it on). It pulls straight off. Shake it and see if it rattles. If it does, it's bad.

Evening Gentlemen,
Well I pulled the compressor start relay off. It has a small rattle when I shake it. It just sounds like a loose contact or something. I'm not sure if that's what you're talking about. It doesn't sound like pieces rattling around.
Also after I've done a bunch of reading on here I started testing the thermostat in the fridge compartment. When the switch is OFF the thermostat is OPEN(infinite ohms). As soon as I turn the switch the thermostat circuit closes. That should be normal operation. Now I think there's a problem because if I dip the thermocouple part of the thermostat in cold water it OPENs again. But when I dip the thermocouple in warm water it never CLOSEs unless I rotate the switch.
My guess is the thermostat(cold control) could be bad because I have to turn the switch for it to kick in.

Well I just ordered the Thermostat and Start Relay. I figured I'd order both to eliminate all possibilities.
You guys are wonderful. Thanks for your help. Now I just have to wait for the parts to come in..... hehe
Thanks again!

OK, that's the problem right there. You won't have to order a thermostat. Just the relay/overload will fix it.

I agree Rick, but it sounds more like his cold control thermostat from his last post, so its best that he order both, he has 365 days to return either for full refund.
