Default Refrigerator not turning back on soon enough (thermostat?)

    Model Number: RT21LMXW01
    Brand: Roper
    Age: More than 10 years

We have had this fridge since the summer of 2001. MFG date on it is 05-01. Recently, I have noticed that it runs, turns off, and does not kick back on quick enough. things in the fridge get warm, items in the freezer defrost a little bit, and I can usually turn the temp dial in the fridge to "off", then back around to 3-4 and it will kick back on.

This morning, it was doing the same thing, but i turned it several times to no avail. After moving all our freezer items down to our deep freeze and all the fridge items into the freezer to keep the cool longer, it finally kicked back on.

What could the problem be? Thermostat going bad? Defrost Timer?

Yes, sorry, left off the J.

This is basically what sits behind that knob in the top of the fridge compartment, right?

Now I will say that this morning when I was turning that nob and nothing was happening, i heard a slight ticking sound. Should I replace the defrost timer too since I will have that area opened up anyway?

*I* would.....costs a little more but is a more reliable repair!
