    Brand: Whirlpool
    Age: 1-5 years

    I have a Whirlpool GSF26C4EXY00 side-by-side fridge/freezer with door ice & water, *just* beyond one year old, so now out of warranty.
    The water dispenser just stopped dispensing water at all. The ice maker is still working fine. When you try to get water, there is an audible electric hum noise.
    I'm good with tools and making appliance repairs, just need to know what the most likely cause is. Water inlet valve?

    Okay, I previously reported my icemaker was still working. It isn't. It is dispensing the ice it still has in the ice bin, but it isn't making any more ice. So I have neither icemaking nor water dispensing, but I do have hum noise when I try to dispense water. Now what do I do???

    Ok,

    Pull your refrigerator out from the wall, then turn off your water supply line, then unscrew your water supply line where it connects to your water inlet valve, then get a bucket or container to catch water in, then put your water supply line in it, then turn on your water, you should have good strong pressure.

    Okay. Pulled fridge out from wall, turned off supply valve, unscrewed supply line from the fridge where it connects to the valve, got a container, opened the valve, got plenty of strong water flow. (I knew it kind of had to, as the valve is in a wall between the kitchen and garage, where the valve is connected to a dedicated half-inch copper line that goes through the wall into the garage, then travels a few feet down the wall where it tees into a 1-inch supply line. But I understand this troubleshooting step, it makes sense to verify that there is actually water going to the fridge.) And once again, if I try the water dispenser I get a humming noise (normal, pump noise I presume?) and I removed the shroud over the icemaker (2 screws), poured water into the icemaker and replaced the shroud, and it made ice and dispenses it fine. (Sounding like the fridge's electronic water valve?)

    Ok, this is a completely new design I'm not familiar with as far as the water inlet valves are concerned, looks like on your model you have 2 water inlet valves, but I did find others with a similar issue, and looks like they have a heater kit fitting to fix this issue.

    Okay, I read through that thread, but I don't think I have that problem. That symptom is icemaker not making ice, water dispenser working, caused by an iced up icemaker water line. My problem is no water to either icemaker or door dispenser, and icemaker makes and dispenses ice fine if I manually pour water into it.

    When I had the fridge out from the wall to check the house water supply to the fridge, I saw that the fridge has a cardboard cover over the bottom in the back. I took it off, being careful not to get sliced up by the spinning fan back there. The water line goes to a valve in back, from there goes up to the filter and comes back down to a second valve that I think is a double valve that has tubes that go to the water dispenser and to the icemaker. I had my wife try to operate the door water dispenser and there was no action in any of the valves. I'm leaning towards that first valve being bad.

    Additionally, I might have bought my fridge using a Sears/Citi Platinum Mastercard. I called the card number on Saturday and confirmed that the card doubles the mfr. warranty out to an extra year. The warranty department wasn't open, but I can call back during business hours and check to see if I bought the fridge on my Sears/Citi platinum Mastercard. I might have bought it on an ordinary Sears card too, so I'm not positive. If I used the Sears/Citi Platinum Mastercard, then I'll have it fixed under warranty.

    Alright, turns out I did buy it with a Sears/Citi Platinum Mastercard, so I've filed a claim with Mastercard's extended warranty coverage, which will reimburse me for the cost of repair. I can have either Sears or a local appliance repair company fix the problem. I've scheduled a service call with Sears online for tomorrow (Tuesday), and I included the extra information that the repair will likely require one of the valves, and included the part numbers. We'll see what happens tomorrow.
