Default whirlpool 106.51183110 (kenmoore elite) Freezer not freezing on upper portion

    Model Number: 106.51183110
    Brand: Sears Kenmore
    Age: Less than 1 year

I noticed my Icemaker was not putting out ice like it had been. The next thing I know it was not making any ice. I was going to start researching it, and then I went to check something today and feezer items were not cold on upper shelves. (ice cream melted frozen foods slightly cold.) Lower shelves were still frozen.

Where do I start? This fridge is fairly new. I am attaching a pic with label from inside.

If its less than a year old, its best to let Sears come out under warranty to see whats going on.

I bought this refrigerator from a scratch and dent shop. Will sears still warrant this to me if i didn't buy directly from them you think?

They should, its still under the manufacturers warranty unless it says on your receipt no warranty.

The people at sears seemed to not want to deal with me and told me to go through the business I bought it from. They then told me they will not honor the warranty if not purchased from sears. I feel like I am going in circles. They want to send a repair tech out with a $75 dollar diagnostic fee if it is not covered. I think it is, but they said it will be determined by the tech.

My question is can I make a diagnosis of the severity of the issue before having their repair tech come out?

I did notice the fridge is not blowing up top out vent. Maybe it is a fan inside?

Ok, Open the freezer door and see if you hear the evaporator(freezer) fan running.

Evaporator(freezer) fan motor, you can order it here:
    Manufacturer's Number: 2315549

Take off the lower back access panel inside the freezer.

Pull of your air duct#5, just unsnaps. to make it easier to get that lower back access panel#17 off, remove the #18 screws:

And see if the coils are caked up with frost, normal would be just a thin layer of frost on all the coils.

Hey thanks for the help Jake. I took these pics after having the door open for a while. Some of the mild frost melted off of the coils. The fan never ran, and I never heard it running or saw vapor coming from duct above. I remember seeing it blow cold vapor from the upper duct in the past when opening the freezer.

I am in a dilemma with calling sears out to diagnose the refrigerator. They want to charge 75 dollars to diagnose the problem, but not sure if they will cover the fridge under their "year" warranty. So that would be 75+ part+ labor. Now that I have this opened up, I think it is the fan. It sounds like your have way more experience than me though. What do you think?

Yes, if that fan is not running while the compressor is not running then you have a bad fan motor, order it from the link I posted to it above.

Ok fan is swapped and is running now. Hopefully that is all the problems I have with the refrigerator. I noticed the coil after having the door shut for extended period never really had mush frost build up. I am wondering if there could be a leak somewhere.

Also does this unit have 2 seperate compressors/coils?

I am going to get a thermometer and leave in freezer to see how cold it is getting. Maybe the fan has that big of an impact on the temp with not air blowing over coil.

OK, If you're running the refrigerator with the cover off the evaporator, it will not cool properly. It must be installed. However, that might be the least of your worries. I see a possible sealed system issue in that last picture you posted. If the machine wasn't scrapped and model tag removed, it should still have the one year warranty on it. But because you've done a repair on it yourself you may have very well voided your warranty by not calling Sears first.
